PHOENIX, Ariz. – A 10-run second inning helped the William Paterson baseball team (4-2-1) cruise past Roger Williams, 14-2, March 14 at the Greater Phoenix (Ariz.) Invitational.
A two-run triple by Jon Marzella (Cedar Knolls, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) helped the Pioneers jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first, and William Paterson followed that with a 10-run explosion in the second. Marzella's three-run double, a sacrifice fly and RBI-single by senior Rick Pignatello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), added to a one-run single by Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny), a two-run base knock by Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and a two-run triple by Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck), plated the runs for the Pioneers. Scott Fischer's (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) RBI-double in the sixth finished the scoring for William Paterson, which won its fourth straight game.
Senior Mike Santana (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) struck out seven batters in 8.0 innings for the victory. Freshman Greg Stokes (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) threw one inning of scoreless relief.
The Pioneers will play Alvernia Thursday, March 15, at 3:00 p.m. (local time) in Phoenix.
