Baseball Rallies for 6-5 Home Win Over Rutgers-Newark

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (10-14, 4-3 NJAC) scored two runs in the seventh inning to capture a 6-5 come-from-behind New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory against Rutgers-Newark (10-15, 2-5 NJAC) April 9 at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rutgers-Newark plated a pair of runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the frame, junior Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) hit a leadoff single and later came around to score on a double by freshman Matt Caruso (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Technical). After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Caruso crossed home on a sacrifice fly by junior Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) to even the score at 2-2.
  • WP took the lead (3-2) in the third after junior Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) singled with one out before scoring on a double to center by senior Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway).
  • The Scarlet Raiders scored three runs in the fifth to go ahead by two (5-3).
  • The Pioneers had runners on the corners with one out in the sixth inning when Brown recorded an RBI single to trim the deficit to one (5-4).
  • Sophomore Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) led off the seventh for WP with a double to left center. He advanced to third on an error on a pickoff attempt before scoring on a wild pitch to knot the game up at 5-5. With two outs and a runner on second, a costly fielding error by Rutgers-Newark allowed the go-ahead run to score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Brown batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Daproza went 2-for-3 with a walk, a triple and two runs scored.
  • Caruso crossed home twice and drove in one run while recording a double as his lone hit.
  • Freshman JT Pugliese (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) earned his second win of the season after pitching 3.0 scoreless frames and striking out two batters.
  • Senior Nick Durso (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) logged his sixth save of the year after shutting down the Scarlet Raiders in order in the ninth inning.
