Baseball Knocked Off in Extra Innings, 7-6

Pioneers Fall at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (10-15, 4-4 NJAC) was knocked off in extra innings, 7-6, at Rutgers-Newark (11-15, 3-5 NJAC) April 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers crossed the plate twice during their first at-bat. Junior second baseman Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) started off with a walk and senior right fielder Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) singled through the right side, later stealing second. Freshman designated hitter Matt Caruso (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Technical) and junior first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) contributed back-to-back sacrifice flies for a 2-0 edge.
  • WP added two more in the second, as senior third baseman Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) drew a leadoff base on balls, senior shortstop Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) sent a base hit to right, sophomore catcher Alex Gomez (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) collected an RBI-single to shortstop, sophomore center fielder Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) put down a sacrifice bunt, and Daproza's groundout plated a run.
  • William Paterson pushed it to a 5-0 advantage during the top of the seventh inning with a Santos base hit up the middle, a wild pitch, a Gomez sacrifice, and a Daproza single.
  • The Scarlet Raiders responded with five runs during the home half of the seventh with three consecutive singles, wild pitch, walk, RBI-groundout, base hit, hit by pitch, and two bases on balls.
  • Rutgers-Newark took its first lead with a triple and single in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Pioneers knotted the score at 6-6 during the top half of the ninth when Santos was issued a one-out walk, sophomore Jesse Bash (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) delivered a pinch-hit single, and Daproza sent a run-scoring base hit to right.
  • A one-out base on balls, wild pitch, intentional walk, walk, and single allowed the Scarlet Raiders to score the game-winning run during the 10th inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Daproza finished 2-for-4 while collecting three RBI and a run scored. Santos went 2-for-3 and scored three times.
