Baseball’s Late Rally Not Enough against No. RV Ramapo, 13-10

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team's (12-17, 5-6 NJAC) late rally wasn't enough as the Pioneers suffered a 13-10 loss to visiting No. RV Ramapo (22-8, 10-3 NJAC) April 16 at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Roadrunners used an error, groundout and single for a 1-0 first-inning edge.
  • Ramapo tacked on three more in the second with a walk and four base hits.
  • Two errors, a single, a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly pushed the Roadrunners' lead to 6-0 during the top of the third inning.
  • The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when junior second baseman Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) drew a two-out walk and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, then scored when senior right fielder Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) singled to right, making it a 6-1 game.
  • A pair of base hits and a groundout pushed Ramapo ahead, 7-1, in the fourth.
  • WP crossed the plate twice during its next at-bat, stringing together a two-out walk by senior third baseman Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional), a passed ball and a wild pitch, a base on balls by senior shortstop Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley), and a two-run double to left by sophomore catcher Alex Gomez (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford).
  • The Roadrunners used a double and triple for an 8-3 edge during the top half of the fifth frame.
  • Ramapo added five more in the seventh with three base hits, a pair of doubles, a walk and a sac fly.
  • Senior Thomas Jova (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle with one out in the seventh, freshman designated hitter Matt Caruso (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Technical) walked and junior first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) was hit by a pitch, leading to a run-scoring fielder's choice for junior left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and a 13-4 margin.
  • The Pioneers got back into it with a six-run eighth inning. Freshman shortstop Christian Pelaez (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) opened the frame with a base hit to center, and junior catcher Mike Peia (Mount Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) followed with a double down the left-field line. Junior pinch hitter Avery Whitney (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) sent an RBI-single to center, and Daproza plated a run with a base hit to right. Jova drew a walk to load the bases for senior pinch hitter Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield), who promptly cleared them with a triple off the fence in center. Colon's two-out single added one more, and WP trailed by a 13-10 count.
  • Whitney led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit, but WP was never able to get the potential tying run to the plate.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Pinto finished 1-for-2 with the three-run triple, scoring once. Whitney went 2-for-2 with an RBI and runs scored.
  • Sophomore Daury Rodriguez (Weehawken, N.J./Cenapec) surrendered eight runs (six earned), 10 hits and two walks, striking out one over 5.0 innings (0-3).
