Baseball Claims 17-7 Win at St. Joseph's Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The William Paterson baseball team (12-16, 5-5 NJAC) claimed a 17-8 non-conference win at St. Joseph's Long Island (13-13, 9-1 Skyline) April 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A leadoff home run in the bottom half of the opening frame gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
  • In the third, junior Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) and senior Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) recorded back-to-back singles before four straight batters were hit by a pitch to put WP in front, 3-1. The Pioneers plated two more runs in the inning off an RBI single by freshman Christian Pelaez (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jesse Bash (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly).
  • St. Joseph's Long Island trimmed the deficit to two (5-3) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third before making it a one-run game with a run in the fourth.
  • After senior Christian Peluso (Bridgewater, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth, senior Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) blasted a ball over the fence in right field for a two-run homer. Six of the next seven WP batters were walked and three more runs crossed, extending the lead to six (10-4).
  • The Pioneers had runners on first and second when sophomore Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) logged an RBI single to right. Two batters later, two Pioneers crossed home on a fielder's choice before junior Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) ripped a two-RBI double to right to push the WP advantage to double figures (15-4).
  • The Golden Eagles plated a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to make it an eight-run game (15-7).
  • With two outs in the ninth, Daproza reached second on a fielding error by the St. Joseph's Long Island left fielder before coming around to score on a two-bagger by Brown. Junior Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) then drove in Brown with a double down the left field line to extend the lead back to double digits (17-7).
