Baseball Topped by Bowdoin

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-7) was defeated 10-5 by Bowdoin (6-6) March 19 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second and grounded into a double play, but a run crossed home to put WP in front, 1-0. Junior Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) then recorded an RBI single to extend the advantage to two.
  • Bowdoin evened the score with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame, before tacking on two more in the third to grab a 4-2 lead.
  • Senior Christian Peluso (Bridgewater, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led off the fourth for the Pioneers with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Jesse Bash (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly). The Pioneers then tied the game at 4-4 once Daproza registered his second RBI base hit of the afternoon.
  • In the fifth, WP had two runners in scoring position with two outs once Peluso logged an RBI single to put the Pioneers in front by one (5-4).
  • Bowdoin responded with the game-tying run in the bottom half of the fifth.
  • The Polar Bears took back the lead in the sixth with three runs on two hits and added two insurance runs in the seventh before closing out the 10-5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Daproza batted 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.
  • Peluso went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Senior Kevin Reiner (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) pitched one scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout.
