Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Coe

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-6) fell 11-5 in game one before dropping game two, 10-1, to Coe (9-5) in a doubleheader March 17 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

GAME ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Coe jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits.
  • WP got on the board in the bottom of the second after freshman Matt Caruso (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Technical) singled to lead off the frame before coming around to score on a two-out RBI base hit by sophomore Alex Gomez (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford).
  • The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to two (4-2) in the third once junior Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) doubled and later scored on an RBI single by senior Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional).
  • The Kohawks plated a pair of runs in the fourth to extend the advantage back to four (6-2).
  • WP had runners on first and second in the fourth after Gomez singled and junior Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) drew a two-out walk. Senior Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) then came up and made it a one-run game (6-5) following a three-run home run.
  • Coe responded with two runs in the top of the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh en route to capturing the 10-5 win.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Colon went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Caruso batted 2-for-4 and crossed home once.
  • Gomez recorded a two-hit outing with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Santos tallied a home run, two walks, two RBI and a run scored.
GAME TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Daproza opened the game with a leadoff single before advancing to second following a walk by Caruso. Santos then drove in Daproza to put the Pioneers on top, 1-0.
  • Coe plated two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead before adding a run in the third.
  • The Kohawks tacked on five insurance runs in the fifth and two in the sixth before securing the 11-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Daproza recorded a hit and scored the lone WP run.
  • Santos batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson will take on Bowdoin Thursday, March 19, at 2:00 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
