Baseball Bested in Season Opener at Stevens, 5-3

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (0-1) fell, 5-3, in its 2026 season opener at Stevens (1-0) Feb. 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) put the Pioneers in front, 1-0, with a leadoff home run in the second inning.
  • The Ducks evened the score in the third on a two-out infield single.
  • Stevens took the lead with three runs in the fifth to go ahead, 4-1.
  • In the seventh, senior Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) struck out swinging with one out, but a costly throwing error by the Stevens' catcher on the play allowed the Piscataway, N.J., native to reach third. Junior Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) then grounded out to the right side of the infield, allowing Brown to cross home and trim the deficit to two (4-2).
  • A leadoff home run by the Ducks in the bottom half of the frame pushed the advantage back to three (5-2).
  • In the ninth, senior Christian Peluso (Bridgewater, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) drew a leadoff walk and made his way to second following a passed ball. With two outs, Daproza ripped an RBI single to right to make it a two-run game (5-3).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) batted 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Daproza drove in two runs and drew a pair of walks.
  • Colon and Brown each recorded a hit and a run scored.
  • Sophomores Gavin DeNardo (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and Jayden Villalta (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), and freshman JT DeRiso (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley), made their WP debuts out of the bullpen, combining to strike out eight batters across 4.0 innings.
