Volleyball Claims Home Victories Against Stevenson and Swarthmore

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (10-6, 2-1 NJAC) secured a pair of home victories after sweeping Stevenson (8-7, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) before capturing a 3-1 victory against No. RV Swarthmore (9-3, 2-0 Centennial) Oct. 3 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
 
MATCH ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers built an eight-point advantage (17-9) in the opening set after an ace by senior Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) capped a 4-0 WP run. The Mustangs pulled within four (18-14), but WP outscored Stevenson 7-3 the rest of the way to earn the 25-17 victory.
  • WP held a one-point edge (8-7) early in the second set before extending the lead to six (18-11) following a 10-4 run. The two sides began trading points until the Pioneers closed out the set with a kill by sophomore Tinashe Magura (Olympia, Wash./Olympia) for the 25-18 win.
  • The Pioneers led by two (22-20) late in the third set before a pair of kills and an ace by Miller sealed the 25-21 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Magura led the Pioneers with a career-high 12 kills.
  • Miller tallied nine kills, nine digs and three aces.
  • Junior Makayda Aldrich (Robbinsdale, Minn./Brooklyn Center) and freshman Presley Weber (McKinney, Texas/Emerson) finished with eight kills apiece.
  • Freshman Sara Rogers (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) compiled a match-high 23 assists.
  • Junior Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) recorded nine digs.
 
MATCH TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers trailed by one (17-16) in the first set before the Garnet used a 7-1 run to push their lead to seven (24-17). Despite WP responding with seven unanswered points, Swarthmore held on for the 26-24 victory.
  • The two sides went back-and-forth for most of the second set and were even at 24-24 until a kill by Miller and an error by the Garnet secured the 26-24 WP win.
  • The Pioneers took a commanding 12-point lead after opening the third set on a 16-4 run. WP maintained its advantage the rest of the way to earn the 25-16 victory.
  • It was a one-point game (12-11) in the fourth set before a kill by Weber sparked an 8-0 run. Swarthmore made a late push and pulled to within two (24-22), but a service error by the Garnet allowed the Pioneers to grab the 25-22 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller paced the Pioneers with 16 kills while adding 13 digs.
  • Aldrich notched 11 kills and three blocks.
  • Magura and sophomore Korinne Bakken (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) each posted 10-kill outings.
  • Weber logged a nine-kill performance.
  • Rogers recorded 28 assists, 14 digs and four aces.
  • Demers had 25 digs, five aces and a career-high 11 assists.
