No. RV/23 Women’s Basketball Rolls to 74-48 Victory at Kean

UNION, N.J. – The No. RV/23 William Paterson women's basketball team (12-1, 6-0 NJAC) remained unbeaten in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play after securing a 74-48 win at Kean (1-9, 1-5 NJAC) Jan. 7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers trailed by five (7-2) early in the first quarter before a 28-8 run that spanned 11:06 put WP ahead by 15 (30-15) with 6:19 remaining in the half.
  • Despite back-to-back Kean baskets, the Pioneers responded with eight unanswered points before taking a 14-point advantage (38-24) into the halftime break.
  • WP extended its lead to 30 (58-28) with 3:02 on the clock in the third quarter after opening the new frame on a 20-4 run. During that stretch, the Pioneers held the Cougars to 2-of-7 (.286) shooting from the field.
  • The Pioneers maintained their large double-digit lead the rest of the way and earned the 74-48 conference road victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Patty Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) collected her third double-double of the season after recording 17 points and 11 rebounds while tying her career-best mark of five blocks.
  • Senior Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) had 14 points, four boards, two assists, a steal and a block.
  • Junior Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) had 11 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting, adding a season-high eight rebounds to go with five assists and four steals.
  • Senior Luna Kirby (Leola, Pa./Linden Hall School for Girls) chipped in with eight points and three assists.
  • The Pioneers are on their longest win streak (6) to start conference play since the 2008-09 campaign.

  • William Paterson returns to the Sports and Recreation Center Saturday, Jan. 10, for a 1:00 p.m. conference game against New Jersey City.
