Volleyball Drops Conference Match at Kean, 3-1

UNION, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (9-6-1, 1-1 NJAC) dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game to Kean (14-2, 1-0 NJAC), 3-1, Sept. 30.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With juniors Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) combining for eight kills, the Pioneers took a commanding 20-9 lead in the opening set. Kean outscored WP, 6-3, before freshman Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) recorded a kill and a service ace to secure the 25-15 victory for the Pioneers.
  • WP trailed 19-16 in the second set until a kill by Miller sparked an 8-2 run that put the Pioneers ahead, 24-21. However, Kean countered with a 6-1 run to earn the 27-25 comeback win.
  • It was a back-and-forth third set and the two sides were even at 21-21 before the Cougars scored four unanswered points to claim the 25-21 victory.
  • WP and Kean traded runs for most of the fourth set until junior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and freshman Emeli Giesler (Milton, Ga./Milton) combined for a block to give the Pioneers the 25-24 edge. Kean closed out the set on a 4-1 run to record the 28-26 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller recorded a team-high 15 kills to pair with four digs.
  • Glenn logged 13 kills.
  • Elliott finished with 13 kills, five digs and three aces.
  • Houpt had a match-high 40 assists while adding seven digs.
  • Sophomore Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) tallied a team-best 19 digs.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson heads to Stevenson, Md., Saturday, Oct. 4, for a matchup against Mary Washington at 2:00 p.m. before taking on host Stevenson at 4:00 p.m.
