Volleyball Earns Wins Over Mary Washington and Stevenson

STEVENSON, Md. – The William Paterson volleyball team (11-6, 1-1 NJAC) swept Mary Washington (5-16, 0-0 CAC) before topping host Stevenson (8-7, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) in four sets Oct. 4.  

MATCH ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers owned a narrow two-point edge (14-12) in the first set until a kill by freshman Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) sparked an 11-2 run to give WP the 25-14 victory.
  • Mary Washington used an 8-3 run to grab a one-point lead (20-19) in the second set. However, the Pioneers countered with a 6-2 run to capture the 25-22 comeback win.
  • WP led for nearly the entire third set until an 8-3 Eagles' run evened the score at 21-21. The Pioneers outscored the Eagles, 4-1, the rest of the way to earn the 25-22 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) logged a match-high 13 kills to go with three digs.
  • Elliott had 10 kills, seven digs and six aces.
  • Junior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) totaled 27 assists, five kills and four digs.
MATCH TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Three unanswered points late in the opening set gave WP the 23-22 edge until the Mustangs countered with three unanswered points of their own to claim the 25-23 victory.
  • A 4-0 Stevenson run trimmed the WP lead to two (19-17) in the second set. However, the Pioneers used a 6-2 run, capped by a kill by junior Laura Gruener (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), to seal the 25-19 win.
  • The Pioneers built a double-digit advantage (23-11) in the third set following a 13-4 run. The Mustangs countered with a 5-1 run, but a kill by Elliott sealed the 25-16 victory.
  • WP trailed by six (14-8) in the fourth set until the Pioneers outscored Stevenson, 17-4, to capture the 25-18 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller recorded a match-best 19 kills to pair with seven digs.
  • Elliott finished with a double-double after compiling 14 kills and 14 digs.
  • Junior Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) had a 10-kill performance.
  • Houpt dished out 47 assists while adding 10 digs.
  • Sophomore Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) notched a match-high 27 digs.
  • Senior Abigail Hayth (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) and junior Leah Molnar (Loudoun, Va./Freedom) had 14 digs apiece.
