Volleyball Captures Thrilling Five-Set Win at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The William Paterson volleyball team (5-5) rallied to claim a thrilling five-set road win at Swarthmore (6-3) Sept. 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a back-and-forth opening set, and the two sides were even at 22-22, until the Pioneers outscored the Garnet, 3-1, the rest of the way to capture the 25-23 victory.
  • WP owned a slim 23-22 advantage in the second set after back-to-back kills by junior Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay). However, Swarthmore responded with three unanswered points to earn the 25-23 win.
  • Trailing, 24-22, in the third set, the Pioneers evened the score following a kill by freshman Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) and an ace by sophomore Jillian Hitt (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair). After each side tallied another point, Swarthmore came out on top with the 27-25 victory.
  • The Pioneers were behind, 18-16, in the fourth set before a kill by freshman Emeli Giesler (Milton, Ga./Milton) sparked a 9-2 WP run that gave the Pioneers the 25-20 come-from-behind win to force a fifth set.
  • In the final set, Swarthmore held an 8-7 lead until the Pioneers flipped the script and went on a 8-1 run to capture the 15-9 victory.
