Volleyball Sweeps New Paltz and Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – The William Paterson volleyball team (7-5) picked up a pair of 3-0 victories over New Paltz (6-5) and Misericordia (8-4) Sept. 20.   

MATCH ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers had a slim 6-5 edge in the opening set before a 16-3 run extended the advantage to 14 (22-8). Despite a 5-2 New Paltz run, a kill by senior Abigail Hayth (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) sealed the 25-13 WP victory.
  • It was all WP in the second set as the Pioneers cruised to a 25-9 win with juniors Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Laura Gruener (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) combining for six kills.
  • WP trailed, 7-5, early in the third set until the Pioneers outscored the Hawks, 20-7, to capture the 25-14 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Glenn and Gruener posted six kills apiece.
  • Freshman Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) logged five kills and three digs.
  • Junior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out 18 assists.
  • Sophomore Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) recorded a team-high six digs.
MATCH TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers held a five-point lead (20-15) in the first set following three straight errors by the Cougars. Misericordia bounced back and used a 5-2 run to pull within two (22-20), but WP held on to claim the 25-22 victory.
  • The Cougars built a four-point advantage (18-14) in the second set, but the Pioneers went on a 9-1 run to go ahead, 23-19. After outscoring WP, 4-1, Misericordia made it a one-point game (24-23) until a kill by Elliott sealed the 25-23 win for the Pioneers.
  • A 17-4 WP run in the third set allowed the Pioneers to grab a 20-7 lead in the third set. The Cougars tried to climb back, but WP warded off Misericordia and earned the 25-13 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Elliott paced the Pioneers with 10 kills to pair with six digs.
  • Houpt recorded 20 assists and eight digs.
  • Demers logged an 18-dig outing.
  • Junior Leah Molnar (Loudoun, Va./Freedom) and sophomore Dilara Pak (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) tallied 13 and 10 digs, respectively.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson returns to the Sports and Recreation Center Tuesday, Sept. 23, to open New Jersey Athletic Conference play against Montclair State at 7:00 p.m.
