Volleyball Sweeps its Way Past Manhattanville, Dickinson

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (4-5) earned a pair of 3-0 sweeps against host Manhattanville (4-2) as well as Dickinson (4-4) Sept. 13.
 
MATCH ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Valiants scored seven of the first eight points of the first set, but the Pioneers rallied to score the final eight for an opening 25-22 win.
  • Ahead by a 23-21 count in the second set, a kill by Laura Gruener (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown). Followed by a block by Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Gruener, handed WP a 25-21 victory.
  • Owning a 16-15 edge during a tightly-contested third, the Pioneers reeled off six unanswered points on their way to a closing 25-16 triumph.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) paced WP with 10 kills, while sophomore Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) collected 16 digs.
  • Junior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) added five kills to her 25 assists.
  • Senior Abigail Hayth (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) contributed three service aces and 11 digs.
 
MATCH TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP raced out a 13-6 lead, then held off a late Red Devil rally for an opening 25-20 victory.
  • Owning a one-point edge at 19-18 during the second set, the Pioneers collected four straight points on their way to a 25-20 decision.
  • William Paterson jumped out a 15-5 third-set lead en route to a 25-18 final win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller again led the Pioneers with 10 kills, and Demers had 15 digs.
  • Houpt dished 25 assists.
 
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson will go to Swathmore Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m.
