Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader with Stockton

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (16-9, 1-5 NJAC) split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with Stockton (11-12, 1-4 NJAC) April 6 at Jeff Albies Field. The Pioneers fell 6-5 in game one before bouncing back for a 2-1 victory in game two.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after plating a pair of runs in the opening frame and adding one in the second.
  • In the fifth, senior Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) drew a base on balls and stole second before scoring on an RBI base hit up the middle by sophomore Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge).
  • The Pioneers opened the sixth with a pair of singles from sophomore Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and senior Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West). After both runners were sacrificed over, senior Tom Radigan (Verona, N.J./Verona) drew a walk to load the bases and set up junior Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) for an RBI single up the middle to make it a one-run game (3-2). Jack then launched a three-run home run to center to put the Pioneers ahead, 5-3.
  • Stockton answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Brown batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Kobylakiewicz logged a two-hit outing with an RBI.
  • Jack drove in three runs, crossed home twice and recorded a stolen base.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two sides were scoreless until Stockton broke through with a run in the sixth inning.
  • WP loaded the bases in the seventh with one out and senior Giovanni Aresta (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) delivered a two-RBI single to left to give the Pioneers the 2-1 edge.
  • Sophomore Robert Nathan (Lords Valley, Pa./Vernon Twp.) stayed on to pitch the eighth and ninth frames, not allowing a single Osprey to reach base as WP secured the 2-1 come-from-behind win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Nathan threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and one earned run while fanning six batters en route to his fourth win of the season.
  • Brown finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
  • Aresta went 1-for-1 with two RBI.
