Baseball Upended by Rutgers-Newark, 8-6

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (17-15, 2-10 NJAC) was upended by visiting Rutgers-Newark (14-18, 6-6 NJAC), 8-6, April 18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A bases-loaded balk and an RBI-groundout allowed the Scarlet Raiders to post two runs during the top of the third inning.
  • The Pioneers answered with four runs during their next at-bat. Junior right fielder Thomas Jova (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) singled through the right side and senior catcher Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) was hit by a pitch before a Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) fielder's choice and a Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) base on balls loaded the bags. Senior center fielder Braden Ramirez (Middlesex, N.J./Union Catholic) drew a walk, forcing across a run, and junior shortstop Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) lifted a ball to center for a sacrifice fly, knotting the score at 2-2. Sophomore left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) dropped a pitch inside the right-field line, driving home two runners for a 4-2 edge.
  • A Jova double, Luckie hit by pitch and Daproza RBI-single through the right side made it a 5-2 game after four frames.
  • Back-to-back solo home runs pulled Rutgers-Newark within one, 5-4, during the top half of the fifth.
  • Another Scarlet Raider solo homer tied the score at 5-5 in the seventh.
  • A three-run double pushed Rutgers-Newark ahead by an 8-5 count during the eighth.
  • Junior catcher Eliot Germanson (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) was hit by a ninth-inning pitch and touched home on a Daproza double for the game's final run.
