Baseball Captures 13-8 NJAC Win at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (17-14, 2-9 NJAC) secured a 13-8 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road victory at Rutgers-Newark (13-18, 5-6 NJAC) April 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP had runners on the corners with one out in the second when a costly fielding error by the Scarlet Raiders allowed two runs to cross. Junior Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) then drove in a run to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
  • The Pioneers had the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth when sophomore Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) recorded a two-RBI single to center to make it a five-run game (5-0). Senior Braden Ramirez (Middlesex, N.J./Union Catholic) followed with a two-RBI triple to right center before another fielding miscue by Rutgers-Newark permitted the fifth run of the inning to score.
  • WP loaded the bases again in the fifth before Daproza ripped an RBI single and Ramirez followed with a base on balls to extend the advantage to 10 (10-0).
  • Rutgers-Newark got on the board in the fifth with three runs on four hits to trim the deficit to seven (10-3).
  • With runners on the corners for WP in the seventh, Daproza drove in his fourth run of the afternoon with an infield single. Two batters later, junior Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) tallied a two-RBI triple to push the WP lead back to double figures (13-3).
  • The Scarlet Raiders pieced together a late rally, scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the WP lead proved insurmountable.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Jose Marte (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) earned the win after tossing 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five.
  • Daproza batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
  • Sophomore Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) logged a three-hit game and crossed home twice.
  • Brown went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Ramirez and Santos each recorded a triple and combined to drive in six runs.
