Baseball Falls in Final Inning at St. Joseph’s-Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The William Paterson baseball team (16-14) twice rallied to tie the score, but a final-inning effort handed host St. Joseph's-Long Island (15-10) a 7-6 win April 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers took advantage of four first-inning walks to take a 1-0 lead.
  • A two-run homer handed the Golden Eagles a 2-1 advantage after one inning.
  • SJLI made it 4-1 in the third with a walk, base hit and triple.
  • WP cut the lead to one during the top half of the fourth inning. Junior catcher Eliot Germanson (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) and junior right fielder Thomas Jova (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) were issued bases on balls, freshman center fielder Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) put down a sacrifice bunt, junior second baseman Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) posted an RBI-groundout and junior third baseman Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) sent a run-scoring base hit to left.
  • William Paterson tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth with a hit by pitch by sophomore left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), a Germanson single and a wild pitch.
  • The Golden Eagles crossed the plate twice during the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a pair of base hits, a hit by pitch, a wild pitch, a walk and a run-scoring double play.
  • The Pioneers again knotted the score, this time at 6-6 in the sixth. Pinto drew a two-out walk, sophomore designated hitter Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) doubled to center field and junior shortstop Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) delivered both runners with a base hit through the left side.
  • A double and single plated the final run during the home half of the ninth.
