Baseball Sweeps Rochester in Pair of Close Games, 11-9 and 5-4

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-3) rallied twice from early deficits to earn an 11-9, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of visiting University of Rochester (0-2) March 8.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A solo homer, walk and single allowed the Yellow Jackets to score twice during the top of the second inning, and a triple and groundout made it a 3-0 score in the top of the third.
  • The Pioneers touched home twice during the home half of the third. Senior catcher Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) led off with a double to left, freshman left fielder Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) had an infield single, junior second baseman Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) delivered a run-scoring base hit through the left side, sophomore shortstop Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) beat out a bunt for a single, and sophomore left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) had a fielder's choice RBI-groundout, making it a 3-2 game.
  • Rochester used a walk, steal and single to add one run in the fourth.
  • WP exploded for a seven-run fourth frame. A two-out infield single by Lauterhahn led to a Colon base hit up the middle. Daproza's swinging strike three got away from the catcher, allowing him to safely reach first and Lauterhahn to race home. Kubis knotted the score at 4-4 with his base hit to left, and sophomore first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for senior center fielder Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.), who plated two runs with his single to left field. Junior third baseman Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) loaded the bags with an infield base hit, and junior right fielder Thomas Jova (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) sent them all home with a double to left, handing the Pioneers a 9-4 advantage.
  • U of R scored once during both the fifth and sixth innings, cutting the lead to 9-6.
  • Lauterhahn reached second base on a hit and error, then scored when Colon singled to left-center field, pushing it to a 10-6 margin.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored three times during the top of the eighth and had the bases loaded with two outs, but a popup ended the inning with the score 10-9 in WP's favor.
  • Luckie's bases-loaded walk forced across Kobylakiewicz for an insurance run in the eighth, 11-9.
  • Rochester threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the game and secured the Pioneers' victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Colon was 4-for-6 at the plate, adding two RBI and a run scored. Lauterhahn finished 3-for-5 and scored three times.
  • Jova went 1-for-4 and posted a double and three RBI, while Jack was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run.
  • Senior Chase Geisler (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) made the start, surrendering five runs (four earned), nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts during 5.0 innings of work (2-0).
  • Sophomore Kevin Reiner (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) tossed 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out three. Senior Neel Telidevara (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) gave up three hits over 0.1 inning.
  • Junior Nick Durso (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) earned his first save of the season, recording the final three outs.
  • The Yellow Jackets received votes in this week's D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Two base hits, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly handed Rochester a 1-0 edge during the top of the first inning.
  • The Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 in the fifth thanks to a base hit, sacrifice and RBI-single.
  • The Pioneers leveled the score during the home half of the fifth. Jova and Jack drew walks and were sacrificed an additional base by junior third baseman Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield). Colon's wind-aided fly ball fell just out of the reach of the second baseman, allowing both runners to cross the plate and tie the game.
  • WP surged ahead during the bottom of the seventh inning. Luckie was hit by a one-out pitch, followed by a Jack base on balls and Pinto hit by pitch. Colon's ground ball on the right side was enough to send Luckie home safely, then Daproza delivered a two-out, two-run base hit up the middle for a 5-2 advantage.
  • U of R got two of the runs back in the eighth with a base hit, RBI-double, infield single and first-and-third baserunning pickle play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Colon was 2-for-3 while driving in three runs, and Daproza finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Sophomore Robert Nathan (Lords Valley, Pa./Vernon Twp.) pitched 7.0 innings, scattering two runs, five hits and a walk while collecting six strikeouts (1-0).
  • Telidevara gave up two runs (one earned) and three hits during 1.0 inning of relief, striking out one. He moved into a tie for fifth place with Mat Sackman (2001-04) on the WP career pitching appearances list (55).
  • Durso took over in the ninth inning, recording all three outs via strikeout for his second save of the day.
