Baseball Suffers Loss to Visiting Stevens

Pioneers Drop 22-7 Decision to Ducks

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (4-3) suffered a 22-7 loss to Stevens (3-4) during a blustery single game March 7 at Jeff Albies Field. The game was ended after eight innings due to darkness.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Ducks crossed the plate five times during the top of the second inning to open the day's scoring.
  • Junior third baseman Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second during the home half of the second, then scored WP's first run of the day when junior right fielder Thomas Jova (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) singled to center.
  • Three singles and a squeeze added two more to Stevens' tally in the third, 7-1.
  • The Pioneers answered with a two-run third. Junior shortstop Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) led off with a base hit through the left side and advanced to third on a failed pickoff before sophomore designated hitter Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) walked. A pinch-hit Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) groundout sent Colon home, and two batters later sophomore left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) singled in Daproza for a 7-3 game.
  • The Ducks opened up a 15-3 lead during the top of the fifth inning.
  • Senior catcher Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) started the home half of the fifth with a hit by pitch and Kubis singled before being replaced by freshman pinch runner Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell). Brown's groundout forced in Luckie and Jova's base hit scored Lauterhahn, making it a 15-5 score.
  • Stevens added four runs to its total in the top of the sixth, and tacked on one more in the seventh.
  • Lauterhahn, Brown and Jova walked to load the bases with one out during the bottom of the seventh inning and senior center fielder Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) sent a two-run single to left field, making it a 20-7 margin.
  • The Ducks posted a pair of runs during the top half of the eighth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) was 3-for-5 with a double, Jova finished 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Kubis went 2-for-3 while adding an RBI.
  • Junior Julian Salinas (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) allowed seven runs (six earned), six hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings as the starter (0-1).
