Baseball Edged in Extra Innings at Scranton, 6-5

SCRANTON, Pa. – The William Paterson baseball team (4-2) dropped its first road contest of the 2025 campaign after falling, 6-5, in 10 innings to Scranton (1-1) in a non-conference game March 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Scranton took an early 1-0 lead after plating a run in the bottom of the first.
  • The Pioneers evened the score in the third inning after senior Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) drew a base on balls before scoring on an RBI triple from classmate Braden Ramirez (Middlesex, N.J./Union Catholic).
  • WP had runners on the corners in the fourth frame when sophomore Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) laid down a successful bunt to drive in a run that put the Pioneers ahead, 2-1.
  • The Royals regained the lead (3-2) in the sixth after scoring two runs.
  • With a pair of runners in scoring position in the eighth, sophomore Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) singled and a costly throwing error by Scranton allowed both runs to score and give WP the 4-3 lead.
  • Junior Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) pinch hit to lead off the ninth for the Pioneers and singled. After being sacrificed over to second and stealing third, Ramirez drove him in with a single through the right side to make it a two-run game (5-3).
  • Scranton knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth following two timely extra-base hits after the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch.
  • The Royals drew back-to-back walks to open to the 10th inning before a walk-off single secured the 6-5 home win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Ian Metzger (Verona, N.J./Verona) struck out three batters in 5.0 innings of work while allowing one earned run.
  • Ramirez batted 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.
  • Junior Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) posted a two-hit performance with a double, a walk and two runs scored.
