Baseball Begins Campaign with Doubleheader Sweep of Mount Aloysius

Pioneers Register 14-0, 9-7 Victories

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (2-0) opened up its 2025 campaign with a 14-0, 9-7 doubleheader sweep of visiting Mount Aloysius (0-2) Feb. 23 at Jeff Albies Field.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers got on the scoreboard immediately with a pair of first-inning runs. Junior third baseman Jordan Brown (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) drew a leadoff walk, and two batters later sophomore first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) tucked a ground ball inside the bag at third that rolled into the left-field corner for an RBI-double. Senior second baseman Tom Radigan (Verona, N.J./Verona) followed with a base hit to center, plating Kobylakiewicz for a 2-0 advantage.
  • WP made it a 4-0 game in the fourth. Junior shortstop Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) led off with a double to center and scored when senior catcher Connor Luckie (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton High West) singled to left. A wild pitch and Brown's double to right-center field were enough to allow Luckie to cross the plate.
  • Brown started the home half of the sixth with a base on balls, followed by a hit by pitch for senior center fielder Braden Ramirez (Middlesex, N.J./Union Catholic), a Kobylakiewicz two-run double, a wild pitch, a Radigan walk, a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and an RBI-single to left field by sophomore shortstop Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia), making it an 8-0 lead.
  • A Ramirez hit by pitch and base hits from Kobylakiewicz and Radigan extended the margin to 9-0 after seven innings.
  • The Pioneers added five two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman left fielder Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) was hit by a pitch, Daproza walked and Luckie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ramirez drew a four-pitch base on balls to force across a runner, two Pioneers scored on an error, and Radigan plated two more with a single up the middle.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Radigan went 4-for-5 at the plate with a triple, four RBI and a run scored. Kobylakiewicz was 4-for-6 while adding two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored.
  • Four Pioneer pitchers combined for the shutout. Senior Chase Geisler (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) tossed the first 6.0 innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out six (1-0).
  • Sophomore Thomas Papeo (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge), junior Chris Quartuccio (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) and junior Cole McGregor (British Columbia, Canada/Delta Secondary School) each worked 1.0 perfect frame of relief.
  • The 14-0 win marked the first time the Pioneers started a season with a shutout victory since 2013, when WP blanked Western Connecticut, 6-0, March 3 at Jeff Albies Field.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mounties got on the scoreboard with a solo home run during their first at-bat.
  • Mount Aloysius added two more in the second thanks to back-to-back doubles and a single with two outs, making it a 3-0 score.
  • William Paterson responded with a six-run second. Radigan began the frame with a single up the middle, senior designated hitter Gio Aresta doubled down the left-field line and Kubis doubled in both runners. Junior shortstop Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) sent an RBI-single to center to tie the game, then senior catcher Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) put down a sacrifice bunt and junior third baseman Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) plated a run with a base hit to center field. After a strikeout, Ramirez reached on an outfield error and stole second, Kobylakiewicz walked and Radigan delivered a two-run single through the right side, handing WP a 6-3 edge.
  • A pair of doubles produced one run for the Mounties in the top of the third inning.
  • Kubis started the home half of the third with a hit by pitch and Santos drilled an offering over the left-field fence, his first career home run, to extend the Pioneers' lead to 8-4.
  • Aresta doubled in Kobylakiewicz, who reached on a two-bagger of his own, for a 9-4 game after four innings.
  • The Mounties plated a pair of unearned runs during the top of the fifth, cutting the WP lead to 9-6.
  • Four MAC base hits made it a 9-7 game in the top half of the seventh.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Radigan finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Santos went 2-for-3 and posted a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Senior Ian Metzger (Verona, N.J./Verona) allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, striking out two during 5.0 innings as the starter (1-0).
  • Sophomore Kevin Reiner (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) gave up a hit and a walk with one strikeout in 1.0 inning of action. Junior Nick Durso (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) surrendered one run and four hits, registering one strikeout over 1.0 inning. Sophomore Robert Nathan (Lords Valley, Pa./Vernon Twp.) struck out three of the six batters he faced, earning his first career save.
