Late-Game Surge Carries Men’s Basketball at UMSV, 87-78

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A late-game surge allowed the William Paterson men's basketball team (6-5) to put away an 87-78 victory Dec. 16 at Mount Saint Vincent (1-8).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers owned a 40-36 halftime advantage, and made their first five field-goal attempts of the second period to open up a 52-42 edge with 16:10 to play.
  • However, the Dolphins didn't fold, putting together a 13-3 burst to forge a 55-55 tie with 12:23 on the clock.
  • UMSV pulled ahead by as many as five (65-60, 9:06), but WP answered with a 13-4 run (73-69, 4:08), and the Pioneers were 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and 2-for-2 from the floor during the game's final 1:18 to turn a three-point advantage into a nine-point win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior forward Ethan Paul (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) tallied his first double-double as a Pioneer with a season-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 9-for-11 (.818) from the field.
  • Sophomore guard Jack Gobel (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken) contributed 17 tallies, four rebounds and three assists, while freshman guard Ty'Shawn Pearson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) notched 14 points and four assists.
  • Sophomore guard Jianni Moran (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) added 12 points.
