Men’s Basketball Tripped Up at Old Westbury, 70-66

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (6-6) was tripped up down the stretch by host Old Westbury (2-9), 70-66, Dec. 18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers opened up an early 12-5 (16:08) lead before the Panthers rallied for a 15-4 run and a 20-16 advantage (8:23). The first half ended with a one-point WP edge, 31-30.
  • Neither team could expand it beyond a two-possession game during the second half in a back-and-forth affair. Senior guard Christian Gilmore's (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) three-pointer nudged the Pioneers ahead by one (59-58, 5:16), but Old Westbury responded by scoring the game's next six points, building a 66-61 edge with 1:15 left.
  • A three-point play from sophomore guard Jack Gobel (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken) cut it to two (66-64, 0:36), and after an Old Westbury bucket, freshman guard Ty'Shawn Pearson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) converted two free throws to again pull WP to within two (68-66, 0:28). The Panthers had a two-for-two trip to the line 12 seconds later, and the Pioneers missed three field-goal attempts during the closing 10 seconds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior forward Ethan Paul (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) paced William Paterson with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.
  • Gobel contributed 13 tallies, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Sophomore guard Jianni Moran (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) posted 12 tallies, and freshman forward Demond Kinchen Jr. (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) collected a season-best 10 points.
