Volleyball Drops Regular-Season Finale to Scranton, 3-2

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (18-11, 5-3 NJAC) dropped its regular-season finale, 3-2, to Scranton (20-10, 8-1 Landmark) in a non-conference match Nov. 6 at the Sports and Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers trailed by one (14-13) in the first set before a kill by junior Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) evened the score and started a 7-2 run. WP held onto its slim lead the rest of the way and captured the 25-22 win.
  • Scranton owned a two-point advantage (13-11) in the second set and outscored the Pioneers, 12-4, to secure the 25-15 victory.
  • Back-to-back attack errors by the Royals pulled the Pioneers to within four (17-13) during the third set. WP trimmed the deficit to two (19-17), but Scranton closed out the set with six unanswered points to earn the 25-17 win.
  • A kill by freshman Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) late in the fourth set knotted the score at 19-19 and sparked a 7-2 run that gave the Pioneers the 25-21 victory.
  • The two sides were even at 11-11 in the fifth set until Scranton pieced together four consecutive points to capture the 25-11 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Elliott finished with a team-high 17 kills while adding seven digs and four aces.
  • Miller logged 14 kills and six digs.
  • Junior Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) had eight kills and two blocks.
  • Junior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out 38 assists to pair with eight digs.
