NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (18-10, 5-3 NJAC) wrapped up New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play with a 3-0 victory at Rutgers-Newark (8-22, 1-7 NJAC) Nov. 4.
The Pioneers have secured the fourth seed in the NJAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Montclair State Tuesday, Nov. 11, with the time to be determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A 7-2 run midway through the opening set put the Pioneers ahead by six (17-11). Rutgers-Newark pulled within three (20-17), but WP used a 5-1 run to secure the 25-18 victory.
- The Pioneers led by four (15-11) in the second set until a kill by junior Laura Gruener (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) sparked a 10-4 run that gave WP the 25-15 win.
- WP owned a two-point advantage (14-12) in the third set before the Pioneers outscored the Scarlet Raiders, 11-3, the rest of the way to claim the 25-15 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) recorded a match-high 13 kills while adding six digs and a pair of blocks.
- Freshman Riley Elliott (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) tallied six kills, five digs and two aces.
- Junior Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out a match-best 28 assists to go with six digs, three kills and three aces.
- Sophomore Bella Demers (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) logged a match-high 16 digs with four assists.
UP NEXT:
- William Paterson will host Scranton Thursday, Nov. 6, for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match.
