Gobel Drains Game-Winner in Men's Basketball's 74-72 Home Victory Against Cairn

WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Jack Gobel (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken) provided the late-game heroics as the William Paterson men's basketball team (3-0) defeated Cairn (3-1), 74-72, Nov. 14 at the Sports and Recreation Center.    

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A jumper by Gobel with 8:34 remaining in the game sparked a 15-2 WP run and put the Pioneers in front, 71-62.
  • Cairn responded with a 10-1 run, capitalizing at the foul line, to even the score at 72-72 with 30 seconds left to play.
  • The Pioneers were holding the ball for the final shot when Gobel received a pass, dribbled to his left near the baseline, rose up and buried the game-winning shot with two seconds left to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Pioneers are off to their best start to a season since beginning the 2019-20 campaign with three consecutive victories.
  • Gobel finished with a team-high 21 points.
  • Sophomore Delani Hyde (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) recorded his first double-double of the season, totaling 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • Senior Cam Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./Bull City Prep) logged a 10-point performance with four boards and a pair of blocks.
  • Senior Ethan Paul (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) tallied nine points.
  • Freshman Nahsir Merrick (Bronx, N.Y./Stephenson) had six points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Freshman Ty'Shawn Pearson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) notched six points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
