Football Upended by No. 15 Chirstopher Newport

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (2-5, 1-3 NJAC) was upended by visiting No. 15 Christopher Newport (7-0, 4-0 NJAC), 52-7, Oct. 25.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A 33-yard carry got the Captains on the scoreboard at the 8:51 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Pioneers answered with an eight-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass by sophomore quarterback Nigel Jennings (Garfield, N.J./Eastside) to sophomore wide receiver Kyle Manley (Philadelphia, Pa./Red Lion Christian Academy). Senior Matt Davidson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) kicked the extra point, tying the game at 7-7 with 4:40 remaining in the opening period.
  • CNU regained the lead two minutes later with an eight-yard run (14-7, 2:43), then added a 42-yard pass play to pull ahead by a 21-7 count 50 seconds before the end of the first.
  • The Captains used a pair of second-quarter one-yard quarterback sneaks (6:20 and 1:57) to build a 35-7 halftime advantage.
  • During the third quarter, Christopher Newport posted touchdowns through the air of 30 (42-7, 7:18) and four (49-7, 3:10) yards.
  • A 26-yard field goal with 10:32 left finished the scoring for the Captains.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jennings finished 7-for-17 for 87 yards and a touchdown.
  • Junior running back Ethan MacNair (Beacon, N.Y./Somerville) carried eight times for 36 yards. Junior wide receiver Brion Dorsey (Bronx, N.Y./Equality Charter) caught four passes for 59 yards.
  • Junior defensive back Kymani Maitland (East Orange, N.J./East Orange Campus) paced the defense with nine tackles (eight solo). Junior linebacker Gavin Rembert (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) made seven stops (five solo).
  • Sophomore defensive back Ramir Bellazin and sophomore defensive back Jhamari Hill (East Orange, N.J./Hillside) each tallied six tackles.

  • William Paterson plays its final road game of the season Saturday, Nov. 1, at Salisbury at 1:00 p.m.
