Volleyball Cruises to Wins Over Hunter and Regis

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's volleyball team (3-3) secured a 3-1 victory over Hunter (4-1) in its first match of the day before sweeping Regis (5-3) later in the afternoon Sept. 7 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
 
MATCH ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers got off to a strong start in the opening set against Hunter with a 16-5 run. The Hawks scored two straight before William Paterson recorded nine unanswered points to seal the 25-7 win.
  • In the second set, the Pioneers were up 10-5 when Hunter went on a 5-0 run to even the score. Both sides continued to trade points, but the Pioneers emerged on top with a 25-20 victory.
  • The Hawks held a 24-19 lead late in the third set when WP scored four straight to make it a one-point game (24-23). However, Hunter managed to edge out the 25-23 set win.
  • Hunter made it a five-point game (16-11) before a 9-1 run gave the Pioneers the 25-12 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Graduate student Hope Arce-Reed (New Carrollton, MD/College Park Academy) led the Pioneers with 15 kills.
  • Sophomore Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) had 14 kills and nine digs.
  • Sophomore Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) finished with 12 kills and five block assists.
  • Sophomore Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded 37 assists, eight digs and seven service aces.
  • Senior Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) logged 19 digs.
 
MATCH TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Regis pulled to within two (17-15) in the first set before a kill by freshman Makayda Aldrich (Robbinsdale, MN/Brooklyn Center) sparked a 7-2 WP run. The Pioneers won 25-18 after Arce-Reed recorded her sixth kill of the set.
  • WP owned a slim two-point advantage (20-18) in the second set but the Pioneers went on a 5-1 run to earn the 25-19 victory.
  • The Pioneers trailed by one (23-22) late in the third set. A kill by Miller evened the score and a costly attacking error by the Pride put WP ahead by one (24-23). Aldrich went on to score the match-deciding point extending the Pioneers' win streak to three matches.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Makayda Aldrich (Robbinsdale, MN/Brooklyn Center) and Arce-Reed posted 10 kills apiece.
  • Houpt totaled 32 assists.
  • Molina finished with a match-high 14 digs.
  • Miller had nine kills and five digs.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers will square off against Colby Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10:00 a.m. in New York City before taking on host New York University at 12:30 p.m.
