Volleyball Sees Win Streak Snapped by Colby, No. 7 NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (3-5) saw its three-match win streak snapped with a pair of closely-contested losses to Colby (4-1) and No. 7 NYU (7-1) Sept. 14.
 
MATCH ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers got off to a hot start, reeling off 13 of the first 15 points on their way to a 25-16 first-set victory against the Mules.
  • Things were tighter in the second, with neither team leading by more than three until WP scored seven straight for a 16-10 advantage. Colby responded with an 8-2 run to tie the set at 18-18, but William Paterson scored the final three points for a 25-21 win.
  • Two big runs allowed the Mules to take the third set, 25-8, and Colby was able to level the match with a 25-18 decision during the fourth.
  • The two teams were knotted at 8-8 during the fifth set, but the Mules turned an 11-10 edge into a 15-11 decisive victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore outside hitter Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) posted her 16th career double-double with 16 kills and 17 digs.
  • Graduate student outside hitter/right side Hope Arce-Reed (New Carrollton, MD/College Park Academy) added 14 kills.
  • Senior libero Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) collected 24 digs.
  • Sophomore setter Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had 35 assists and 11 digs.
 
MATCH TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-4 advantage on the seventh-ranked Violets, and a later 10-0 run helped WP start the match with a 25-14 win.
  • NYU responded by scoring the first 10 points of the second set en route to a 25-6 victory.
  • A pair of NYU errors kept WP within three at 21-18 late in the third, but the Violets were able to close out a 25-19 decision.
  • NYU finished off the match with a 25-7 fourth-set win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller led the Pioneers with 10 kills, while Arce-Reed and sophomore middle hitter Sofia Zablackis (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) each put down seven.
  • Molina posted 17 digs and three service aces.
  • Houpt chipped in 30 assists and eight digs.

  • William Paterson faces Scranton Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10:00 a.m. at NYU.
