Football Falls in Season-Opening Loss at FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-1) fell 37-9 in its 2024 season opener to FDU-Florham (1-0) Sept. 6 on the road.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • FDU-Florham jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 5:59 on the clock in the first quarter after marching 65 yards down the field on 10 plays.
  • The Pioneers were forced to punt on the ensuing drive but the Devils' returner misplayed the ball, allowing WP to recover the ball at the FDU-Florham 49-yard line. After recovering the ball, the Pioneers used 11 plays to gain 32 yards before sophomore Robert Crehan (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) connected on a 34-yard field goal to make it a four-point game (7-3) with 32 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
  • The Devils kicked a 31-yard field goal with 10:10 on the clock to cap their first drive of the second quarter and tacked on 14 unanswered points to take a 24-3 advantage into the half.
  • FDU-Florham continued to build on its lead and went ahead 36-3 after adding a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters.
  • The Pioneers recorded their first touchdown of the season with 5:50 remaining in the game once junior Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) rushed 10 yards into the endzone to cap a seven-play drive that spanned 61 yards.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Cherry rushed for a team-best 39 yards on eight carries.
  • Junior Kyree Hinton (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) recorded five catches for a team-high 69 yards in his WP debut.
  • Graduate student quarterback Connor Katz (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) threw for 157 yards on 14 completions.
  • Senior Samod Wingo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) finished with a game-high 12 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.
  • Sophomore Nyamah Kolliegbo (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) totaled seven tackles.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers will welcome Dickinson to Wightman Stadium Saturday, Sept. 14, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
