Volleyball Earns Win in NJAC Opener at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (8-5,1-0 NJAC) defeated Montclair State (8-6, 0-1 NJAC), 3-1, for its first NJAC win of the season Sept 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers surged to a 20-12 lead over Montclair in the opening set with sophomore Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and graduate student Hope Arce-Reed (New Carrollton, Md./College Park Academy) leading the way with four kills apiece. William Paterson maintained its lead and secured a 25–18 set win.
  • In a back-and-forth second set, Montclair emerged victorious, 25-21.
  • William Paterson took control of the third set after a service ace by junior Abigail Hayth (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) put the Pioneers ahead, 17-11. The Red Hawks countered with three unanswered points, but WP responded with an 8-4 run to capture the 25-18 set victory. 
  • Building on their momentum, the Pioneers grabbed a seven-point advantage (17-10) in the fourth set following a kill by Miller that sparked a 9-5 run and led to WP claiming the 25-15 set win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller led the Pioneers with 20 kills and added18 digs.
  • Arce-Reed registered 19 kills.
  • Sophomore Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) delivered nine kills.
  • Sophomore Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded 47 assists, 12 digs, and three service aces.
  • Senior Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) tallied 32 digs and 4 assists.
  • Senior Ciara Feliz (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) had 10 digs.

  • William Paterson hosts Kean Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sports and Recreation Center.
