Volleyball Bested by No. 1 Juniata

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The William Paterson volleyball team (0-3) was bested in three sets by the reigning national champions, No. 1 Juniata (2-0), on the final day of the Captains Classic Aug. 31.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Back-to-back attack errors by Juniata pulled the Pioneers within four (15-11) in the first set. However, the Eagles outscored WP 10-3 the rest of the way to grab the 25-14 win in the opening set.
  • A late 6-2 run in the second set had the Eagles ahead, 23-21, before a service error and consecutive kills by graduate student Hope Arce-Reed (New Carrollton, MD/College Park Academy) put the Pioneers in front (24-23). Juniata evened the score and went on to secure the 26-24 set-two victory.
  • It was a back-and-forth third set before the Eagles went on a 5-1 run to grab a 20-15 advantage. The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to two (21-19) after an Arce-Reed kill and a service ace by sophomore Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley). Juniata limited any further damage and secured the 25-22 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Arce-Reed paced the Pioneers with 10 kills.
  • Sophomore Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) finished with seven kills and five digs.
  • Senior Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) logged a team-high 16 digs.
  • Sophomore Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out 20 assists.

UP NEXT:
