Baseball Comes Up Short at Scranton, 12-6

SCRANTON, Pa. – The William Paterson baseball team (9-25) came up short at Scranton (23-8), 12-6, in non-conference action April 23.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers scored twice during their first at-bat. Junior shortstop Tom Radigan (Verona, N.J./Verona) and senior center fielder Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) started the game with base hits, followed by a one-out walk by freshman first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge). Junior left fielder Austin Jack (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right and junior third baseman Tyler Ruban (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) added an RBI-single to center field for a 2-0 edge.
  • Three base hits and a walk netted the Royals two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-2 score.
  • Scranton took a 5-2 lead in third behind a walk, hit by pitch, two singles, an error and a sac fly.
  • A walk and double added one to the Royals' ledger in the fourth.
  • Lutz doubled in junior second baseman Ruven Pino (Fairview, N.J./Bergen Catholic), who reached via a hit by pitch, for a 6-3 game in the fifth.
  • The Royals tacked on one run during the home half of the same frame with a single, hit by pitch and base hit.
  • Scranton crossed the plate five times in the seventh thanks to three hits, three walks, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly, surging ahead by a 12-3 count.
  • WP used an infield single by junior designated hitter RJ Mehnert (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic), a Kobylakiewicz base hit to right, a Jack two-run double to left field and a Gio Aresta sac fly to post three runs in the eighth.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Radigan was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Jack drove in three runners.
  • Freshman Kevin Reiner (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) tossed 3.1 innings and allowed six runs on six hits and three walks, striking out two (0-1).
  • Senior Nick Nielson (Avenel, N.J./Colonia) worked 1.2 innings of one-run ball, scattering three hits.
  • Sophomore Cole McGregor (British Colombia, Canada/Delta Secondary School) gave up three hits, four runs and a walk over 1.1 innings.
  • Junior Matt Lemieux (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) surrendered one run on one hit and two walks during 0.2 inning of action.
  • Junior Nick Estes (Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) recorded the final three outs, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one.
