Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Bested by Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (6-17, 1-15 NJAC) dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game to Rutgers-Newark (12-11, 8-8 NJAC), 78-59, Feb. 7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing by seven (19-12) with 8:40 remaining in the first half, a 3-pointer by graduate student MJ Moncrieffe (Maplewood, N.J./Marist) sparked a 20-7 William Paterson run that spanned over six minutes to put the Pioneers ahead by six (32-26).
  • The advantage did not hold for long as the Scarlet Raiders countered by closing out the half on a 14-4 run to go into the break leading by four (40-36).
  • William Paterson evened the score at 40-40 two minutes into the second stanza, but Rutgers-Newark responded with a 10-2 spurt to regain the lead (50-42).
  • Six quick unanswered William Paterson points capped by a Moncrieffe dunk made it a two-point game (50-48) with 13:50 on the clock. However, the Scarlet Raiders used a 10-2 run to push the lead to double figures (61-50).
  • The Pioneers pulled within five (63-57) at the 5:44 mark, but a 15-0 Rutgers-Newark run put the game out of reach and the Scarlet Raiders went on to secure the 78-59 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Moncrieffe finished with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting with four rebounds, three blocks, an assist and a steal.
  • Junior Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) went for 16 points, five rebounds and four assists with a steal.
