Women's Basketball Wins Steel Club Classic Consolation Round Against Saint Elizabeth, 84-59

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (7-4, 4-1 NJAC) won the consolation round of the Steel Club Classic hosted by Moravian University after earning an 84-59 bounce-back win against Saint Elizabeth (7-5, 3-0 United East) Dec. 30.   
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers owned a slim three-point advantage (18-15) following the first quarter but broke the game open in the second frame after four consecutive 3-pointers by WP sparked a 26-11 run that extended the lead to 20 (50-30) entering the half.
  • WP maintained its large lead and closed out the third quarter on a 12-2 run to push the advantage to 26 (70-44).
  • The Pioneers' lead grew to as large as 32 (76-44) after scoring six unanswered points to open the fourth frame before going on to secure the 84-59 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) recorded her second 20-point performance of the season after shooting 8-of-13 (.615) from the field and 4-of-5 (.800) from deep to tie her career-best scoring mark of 22 points.
  • The Leonardo, N.J., native was named to the Steel Club Classic All-Tournament Team.
  • Senior Jade Martinez (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) went 5-of-7 (.714) from the floor for a season-best 16 points.
  • Junior Patty Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) logged 10 points.
  • Senior Victoria Palladino (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) filled the stat sheet, totaling eight points and a season-high five assists while adding four rebounds and four steals.
  • Sophomore Jada Jacobs (Mount Laurel, N.J./Medford Tech) reeled in a team-best seven boards.

  • William Paterson returns to the Sports and Recreation Center Saturday, Jan. 4, for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game against Western Connecticut State.
