Football Falls Short on Homecoming, 21-14

Pioneers Drop One-Possession Game to TCNJ

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (1-8, 0-5 NJAC) fell one score short of visiting The College of New Jersey (6-3, 3-2 NJAC), suffering a 21-14 Homecoming football loss Nov. 9 at Wightman Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers struck first, recovering a bad TCNJ snap that was returned 25 yards by freshman Joseph Pressley (Allentown, Pa./Pemberton) for a touchdown and a 7-0 edge just 1:06 into the contest.
  • The Lions knotted the score at 7-7 on a one-yard run with 11:46 left in the first quarter, then took a 14-7 lead with a four-yard carry midway through the opening period.
  • Senior Taron Gale (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow) helped keep it a one-score margin with his interception in the end zone 3:43 before halftime.
  • TCNJ notched the only points of the third quarter, a five-yard rush at the 2:25 mark for a 21-7 score.
  • Sophomore quarterback Mahsiah McRae (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) found junior Kyree Hinton (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) open down the left sideline and Hinton turned it into a 69-yard touchdown. Sophomore Robert Crehan (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) kicked the PAT and it was a 21-14 game with 0:41 to play. WP attempted an onside kick, but the Lions recovered to seal their victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McRae finished 18-for-24 for 174 yards and a touchdown under center. He also rushed 12 times for a net of 53 yards.
  • Junior running back Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) carried 15 times for 82 yards, while Hinton caught four passes for 89 yards and a score.
  • Junior defensive back James Nevels (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) paced the defense with eight tackles.
  • Senior linebacker Samod Wingo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) and junior defensive lineman Quamire Green (Brick, N.J./Donovan Catholic) each contributed six stops, including 1.0 sack.
  • The 69-yard passing touchdown was the longest of the season for WP.
