Football Bested by Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The William Paterson football team (1-7, 0-4 NJAC) fell 45-7 to Christopher Newport (5-3, 3-1 NJAC) in a road New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game Nov. 2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Captains began their second drive of the game from the WP 46-yard line with 12:44 remaining in the opening quarter before a 46-yard rush on the first play gave CNU the early 7-0 advantage.
  • Starting at their own 30-yard line with 5:56 on the clock in the first frame, the Captains used two plays to drive 70 yards down the field and into the end zone to make it a two-score game (14-0).
  • With 2:28 remaining in the quarter, WP had a costly interception that set up CNU at the Pioneer 4-yard line. Two consecutive rush attempts allowed the Captains to push the lead to 21-0.
  • On the CNU opening drive of the second quarter with 14:45 on the clock, the Captains used 10 plays to drive 50 yards for the score to make it 28-0.
  • The Captains tacked on another touchdown with just over two minutes remaining before adding a 24-yard field goal prior to the halftime break to extend the lead to 38-0.
  • After stopping CNU on its first drive of the second half, senior Nolan Epps (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) received a punt at the WPU 44 and returned it 56 yards for the score to make it 38-7.
  • The Captains found the end zone one final time in the game after the seven-play scoring drive began at the 8:55 mark of the fourth quarter.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Mahsiah McRae (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) rushed eight times for a career-high 91 yards.
  • Junior Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) logged 20 rushes for 53 yards.
  • Epps recorded his first punt return touchdown.
  • Junior Quamire Green (Brick, N.J./Donovan Catholic) totaled a team-high 11 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • Freshman Joseph Pressley (Allentown, Pa./Pemberton) made seven stops with 2.0 tackles for loss.
