Men’s Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season

Pioneers Drop 89-63 Road Contest to Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, dropping an 89-63 decision at Penn College (2-2) Nov. 16.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers jumped out to an 18-11 advantage (11:03) early and owned a narrow 40-38 halftime lead behind 46.9 (15-32) percent shooting during the game's first 20 minutes.
  • The Wildcats opened the second period with an 18-2 run to build a 56-42 advantage at the 15:21 mark, and a later 20-6 burst gave Penn College control of the contest at 77-50 (9:30). The Wildcats connected on 56.7 (17-30) percent of their attempts  from the field during the second period while limiting the Pioneers to 10-for-40 (.250) shooting overall and a 2-for-18 (.111) effort from behind the arc.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior guard Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) paced William Paterson with 20 points, adding five rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Jack Gobel (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken) notched his second double-digit scoring total with 11 points.
  • Senior guard Andre Wells (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) added five assists to his six points and five rebounds.
  • Freshman forward Delani Hyde (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and senior forward Tim Gjonballa (Brooklyn, N.Y./Jackson Liberty) shared the team lead in rebounding with six apiece.
