Men's Basketball Drops Home Contest to New Jersey City, 85-81

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (6-13, 1-11 NJAC) was bested 85-81 by New Jersey City (6-13, 3-9 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game Jan. 24 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A 3-pointer by senior Patrick Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) with 12:41 on the clock in the first half pulled the Pioneers within four (13-9). However, the Gothic Knights went on a 14-5 run that spanned 6:02 of action to build a double-digit lead (27-14).
  • New Jersey City went into the half leading by 16 (41-25) and the advantage grew to as large as 20 (51-31) with 17:10 remaining in the game after back-to-back baskets.
  • The Pioneers slowly began to chip into the deficit and eventually got into a rhythm offensively with 13:41 on the clock. They shot 8-for-12 (.667) from the field over nearly a seven-minute stretch to outscore New Jersey City, 23-12, and trim the deficit to five (71-66).
  • The two sides began to trade baskets and a 3-pointer by junior David Martinez (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) with 57 seconds left to play made it a three-point game (82-79). However, the Pioneers were unable to complete the comeback and ultimately fell, 85-81.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the charge offensively with a team-high 20 points to pair with seven assists.
  • Junior Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) finished the night with 18 points.
  • Junior Andre Wells (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) posted a 17-point outing on 6-of-9 (.667) shooting with a team-high eight rebounds to go with three assists and a pair of steals.
  • Graduate student MJ Moncrieffe (Maplewood, N.J./Marist) went 7-for-13 (.538) from the field for 15 points.
  • Monahan tallied eight points.

  • William Paterson heads to Galloway, N.J., Saturday, Jan. 27, for a 3:00 p.m. conference game at Stockton.
