Volleyball Splits Pair of Five-Set Contests at Ursinus Tri-Match

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The William Paterson volleyball team (9-3) dropped a hard-fought five-set match to Penn State Behrend (11-3) before rebounding to defeat host Ursinus (7-7) in five sets Sept. 23.
 
MATCH ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lions scored the last seven points for a 25-18 first-set win, but the Pioneers put together an 11-0 run midway through the second set to come away with a 25-13 victory.
  • PSU Behrend again posted a 25-18 decision to take a 2-1 lead, but WP scored five of the last six points for a 25-23 fourth-set decision.
  • Trailing 13-9 in the fifth, William Paterson pulled within one at 13-14, but a final service error gave the Lions a 15-13 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman outside hitter Natalie Zabloudil (London, Ohio/London) collected her second double-double with 16 kills and a season-high 18 digs.
  • Freshman outside hitter Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) added 14 kills and 12 digs, her third double-double of the season.
  • Junior libero Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) posted 23 digs, and freshman setter Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had 28 assists and seven digs.
 
MATCH TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bears scored five of the last six points to take the first set, 25-21.
  • The two teams were knotted at 8-8 in the second set, but Ursinus put together a 7-1 run en route to a 25-18 win.
  • Two late kills and a service ace helped the Pioneers turn a 21-21 score into a 25-22 third-set victory.
  • WP opened the fourth set with a 7-1 burst and ran away with a 25-9 triumph.
  • The Bears led by as many as four (8-4) during the fifth set, but the Pioneers eventually forged a 12-12 tie. A William Paterson kill and two Ursinus attack errors allowed the Pioneers to record a final 15-12 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller posted 19 digs and a season-best 17 kills.
  • Zabloudil had 15 kills, and Molina collected a match-best 25 digs.
  • Houpt dished 42 assists.
