Volleyball Sweeps Wilkes at Home

Pioneers Add Sixth Win of the Season

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (6-1) swept Wilkes (3-2) in three sets at the Sports and Rec Center on Sept. 12.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams stayed within four points of each other until the Colonels caught up 10-10. A Wilkes' service error sparked a WP 5-0 run, including two service aces from junior libero Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe), to help the Pioneers stay ahead and earn a 25-22 first-set victory.
  • The Pioneers came out hot in the second set with a 6-0 lead and stayed ahead by five or more points the entire way to a 25-15 winning set.
  • Eight services aces by the Pioneers led to a 25-21 third-set win to close out the series. Freshman middle hitter Laura Gruener (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) posted three of the eight service aces.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman outside hitter Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) recorded a season-high 13 kills and three aces.
  • Molina secured eight digs and two service aces.
  • Freshman setter Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) earned a game-high 19 assists, adding four digs and two service aces.
  • Gruener posted a season-high three aces and three digs.
  • Freshman middle hitter Sofia Zablackis (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) led both teams with four blocks.
  • The Pioneers totaled for 16 service aces against the Colonels.
