Baseball Falls to Red Hawks

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (19-11, 7-4 NJAC) suffered a 9-2 loss at Montclair State (18-9, 5-6 NJAC) April 20.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers struck first when graduate student catcher Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) singled up the middle and graduate student first baseman Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) doubled to right center, handing WP a 1-0 first-inning edge.
  • A base hit, double and two-run single gave the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead during the home half of the fifth.
  • MSU added one in the sixth thanks to an error, base hit, sacrifice bunt and error, 3-1.
  • William Paterson cut its deficit in half in the seventh when graduate student second baseman Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) was hit by a pitch and scored off an error.
  • The Red Hawks broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning behind five singles, a hit by pitch and a walk.
  • A solo homer extended the Montclair State advantage to 9-2 after eight innings.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Weis was 2-for-5 with a double and RBI, while Lombardo finished 1-for-3 and added a triple and run scored.
  • WP left 12 runners on base. Additionally, Yelin saw his streak snapped at five straight games with a homer run.
  • Graduate student Matt Lawler (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) worked the first 5.1 innings and was charged with three runs (two earned), six hits and two walks, adding two strikeouts (3-2).
  • Senior Dan Castaneda (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) allowed four hits, five runs and a walk over 1.0 inning, striking out two.
  • Junior Nick Nielson (Avenel, N.J./Colonia) recorded two outs, one by strikeout. Sophomore Pat Pantoliano (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) surrendered a run and a hit during 1.0 inning of relief.
