Late Rally Denies Baseball Home Win Against Montclair State

WAYNE, N.J. – A six-run ninth inning by Montclair State (19-9, 6-6 NJAC) proved to be the difference as the William Paterson baseball team (19-12, 7-5 NJAC) fell 12-8 to the Red Hawks April 21 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A pair of base hits in the top of the second allowed the Red Hawks to grab a 1-0 advantage before tacking on an additional run in the third.
  • In the bottom half of the third, William Paterson loaded the bases after graduate student Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) was hit by a pitch and back-to-back Pioneers drew a base on balls. sophomore Tyler Ruban (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) drove in one on an RBI single before another run came in to score on a bases loaded walk by sophomore Tom Radigan (Verona, N.J./Verona). Junior Noah Cabassa (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) put the Pioneers ahead 3-2 after a base hit and one more run crossed home on a costly wild pitch to extend the lead to two (4-2).
  • William Paterson continued to apply the pressure and plated two runs in the sixth. Cabassa and junior Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) led things off with consecutive singles and a sacrifice bunt by graduate student Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) set up Weis for a two-RBI double to left center.
  • The Red Hawks trimmed the deficit to two (7-5) following a three-run seventh inning.
  • The Pioneers got one run back in the bottom half of the frame once Radigan belted a two-out double before Cabassa drove him in on an RBI base hit.
  • In the ninth, Montclair State got into a groove at the plate and scored six runs on seven hits to grab a 12-8 lead before closing out the game to earn to victory.
