Women's Basketball Rallies Late in 59-51 Win Over Kean

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (2-3, 1-0 NJAC) outscored Kean (2-4, 0-1 NJAC) 41-26 in the second half to earn a 59-51 come-from-behind win in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener Nov. 21 at the Sports and Recreation Center.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers trailed, 25-18, entering the third quarter before Kean pushed the advantage to 14 (32-18) following a 7-0 run to open the new frame.
  • With 6:57 remaining in the third quarter, the Pioneers erupted for a 17-2 run to even the score at 36-36. Senior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) buried three 3-pointers during that stretch while sophomore Patricia Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) added six points.
  • The two sides began to trade baskets and were tied at 51-51 with 1:55 left to play before freshman Mattison Chiera (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) connected on a three-point shot to put the Pioneers ahead, 54-51.
  • Smith knocked down a jumper inside the paint with 25 seconds on the clock and was fouled on the play. After converting on the three-point play, William Paterson iced the game and recorded the 59-51 conference victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Smith led all scorers with a game-high 17 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Walsh logged 16 in the scoring column to pair with six rebounds.
  • Sophomore Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) recorded nine points and seven boards.
  • Chiera chipped in with six points and five rebounds.
