Women's Basketball Topped by Maine Maritime

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (1-3) fell 73-62 to Maine Maritime (3-2) in the consolation final of the Morin Memorial Tournament hosted by Williams College Nov. 19.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers held an early 8-6 advantage before Maine Maritime closed out the final four minutes of the first quarter on a 12-3 run to grab a seven-point lead (18-11).
  • A 12-4 run that spanned the first six minutes of the second quarter allowed the Mariners to extend their advantage to double figures (30-15).
  • Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) began to heat up for the Pioneers in the third quarter and back-to-back 3-pointers by the senior sparked a 10-1 run that pulled William Paterson within eight (43-35) with 4:03 remaining in the frame.
  • That would be as close as the Pioneers would get as Maine Maritime built its lead back to double digits and never looked back en route to earning the 73-62 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Smith scored a game-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and two steals.
  • Sophomore Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) logged 14 points and five rebounds.
  • Sophomore Patricia Walsh (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) recorded a 10-point outing with a team-high seven boards.
