Volleyball Captures Pair of 3-0 Wins Over St. Joseph's (L.I.) and Old Westbury

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (22-5, 4-3 NJAC) picked up a pair of 3-0 victories over St. Joseph's (L.I.) (15-8, 9-2 Skyline) and The College at Old Westbury (2-21, 1-11 Skyline) Oct. 28.

MATCH ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first set was a back-and-forth battle between William Paterson and St. Joseph's and the two sides sat even at 23-23. Freshman Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) came up with a kill to give the Pioneers the one-point edge (24-23) before she served an ace to give WP the set win.
  • In the second set, the Pioneers led by one (8-7) before a kill by Miller sparked a 9-2 run. The Golden Eagles scored on back-to-back rallies, but WP responded with an 8-1 run to capture the 25-12 set victory.
  • WP trailed 6-4 early in the third set before an 8-1 Pioneer run quickly erased the deficit. The Golden Eagles pulled within three (12-9), but William Paterson outscored them 13-5 the rest of the way to secure the 25-14 win.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Miller had a match-high 11 kills with three digs, three aces and two blocks.
  • Freshman Natalie Zabloudil (London, Ohio/London) logged eight kills, four blocks and four digs.
  • Freshman Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) recorded seven kills on 10 attacks for a .700 attack percentage.
  • Freshman Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out 29 assists to pair with four digs.
  • Junior Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) notched 17 digs.
MATCH TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers held a two-point edge (8-6) in the first set when an 11-1 WP run broke the set wide open. Old Westbury trimmed the deficit back to single digits (19-10) after three unanswered points, but William Paterson took care of business the rest of the way to earn the 25-12 set victory.
  • WP trailed 22-20 late in the second set before back-to-back kills by sophomore Alexa Jarvis (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) started a 5-0 run that gave the Pioneers the 25-22 come-from-behind set win.
  • It was a one-point game (5-4) in favor of the Pioneers in the third set when WP got into a groove and outscored Old Westbury, 20-8, to close out the 25-13 set victory.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Abigail Hayth (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) tallied a team-high 12 kills to go along with eight digs and three aces.
  • Sophomore Erica Bickart (Tucson, Ariz./Marana) logged eight kills and four digs.
  • Jarvis handed out 25 assists to pair with six digs.
  • Freshman Leah Molnar (Loudoun, Va./Freedom) had a team-best 16 digs.
UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers return to the Sports and Recreation Center Tuesday, Oct. 31, for a 7:00 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference match against New Jersey City.
