Volleyball Sweeps Rutgers-Newark to Extend Win Streak

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (18-4, 3-2 NJAC) extended its win streak to seven after claiming a 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-10) New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road victory over Rutgers-Newark (9-10, 1-4 NJAC) Oct. 17.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two sides were even at four apiece in the opening set before the Pioneers went on a 14-3 run to take an 11-point advantage (18-7). The Scarlet Raiders trimmed the deficit back to single digits (19-10), but William Paterson outscored Rutgers-Newark 6-2 the rest of the way capped off by a Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) kill to capture the 25-12 win.
  • The Pioneers held a 15-10 lead in the second set before they embarked on a 10-2 run to secure the 25-12 set victory.
  • William Paterson jumped out to a 15-5 advantage in the third set with Miller pacing the way with four kills. Rutgers-Newark pulled within eight (16-8), but the Pioneers responded with a 9-2 run to claim the 25-10 set win.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Pioneers have swept each of their last four opponents to extend their unbeaten set streak to 12.
  • Miller recorded a match-high 12 kills to pair with three digs.
  • Freshman Sofia Zablackis (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) logged seven kills and three blocks.
  • Freshmen Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Natalie Zabloudil (London, Ohio/London) posted six kills apiece.
  • Zabloudil added five digs and four aces to her stat line.
  • Freshman Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out a match-best 29 assists to go with six digs and five aces.

UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers return to the Sports and Recreation Center Thursday, Oct. 19, for a 7:00 p.m. match against Montclair State.
