Women's Basketball Edges Ramapo for Bounce-Back Win

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (10-5, 5-3 NJAC) earned a bounce-back New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory after edging Ramapo (11-3, 6-2 NJAC), 54-50, on Jan. 11 at the Sports and Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers got off to a hot start and grabbed a 15-point lead (27-12) with 6:21 left in the first half with senior Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) leading the way with 16 points.
  • Ramapo continuously chipped into the deficit and evened the score at 37-37 with 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter. However, William Paterson responded with a 9-3 run to go ahead by six, 46-40, before eventually icing the game at the foul line to earn the conference win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Cabezas posted her fourth double-double of the season after going for a game-high 22 points on 9-of-18 (.500) shooting to pair with 10 rebounds.
  • It was her third 20-point performance of the year.
  • Freshman Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) logged eight points with a career-high 11 boards.
  • Junior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) finished the night with eight points and five rebounds.
  • Senior Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) recorded eight points.
  • Senior Allison McBride (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) reeled in a season-high nine rebounds.
  • The Pioneers outrebounded the Roadrunners, 58-37.

  • The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14, to take on Rutgers-Camden in Camden, N.J., with tipoff slated for 1:00 p.m.
